October-Land takes place some time around the 1900/1930s in a little town called Moonshore in the United Kingdom. For decades, the area has been regarded cursed by outsiders for various incidents taking place there, involving children going missing as well as super-natural occurances. Moonshore is surrounded by mountains and forest, which secludes it from the rest of the world. The nearest neighbouring town is about an hour away and most people don't even consider leaving Moonshore, nor is it often visited.
The townfolk have been deeply spiritual and religious, supposedly ever since the town came to be and often, non-believers are shunned and shamed by the masses. They live somewhat backwards, often being skeptical about new inventions, since they are convinced that too much convenience would make people lazy and loose sight of the value that comes with life.

Elliot Goldburg is the main character of this story. An unusually terrified boy, squirming and flinching at almost everything in fear of being hurt. He is - as most people - devoted to religion and spirituality. Unfortunately, most of his fears seem to stem from that belief system as well...
Fortunately, despite that, he is determined to complete whatever task he is taking on. In the story, his objective forces him to confront his fears and often times, whether he will manage to or not will be up for debate.
